All games are learning tools, differing in the subjects they teach. At the most fundamental level, they teach game mechanics that enable players to become better players in the game. Some games teach more than just game mechanics however. They teach things that may be useful in the real world.
This month's session focuses on games that are designed (sometimes unintentionally) for learning--games that are more than just pure entertainment. We will discuss what makes a good learning game and why games are a well-suited learning medium. We will talk about the 'gamer mind', how it relates to the real world, and how designing games is an excellent way to learn about a game's subject matter.
Also, we welcome Greg Trefry of GameLab, a project manager and designer for GameStar Mechanic, who will be sharing his experience on the creation of games that teach game design. Greg teaches game design at NYU and CUNY, and have also spoken at various venues including GDC 2008.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note the change in time and venue. Just say you are there for the Game Development MeetUp. I have taken care of the $2 entry fee, but donations are welcome.
