SUMMARY:Games Gateway: Virtual Education From The Inside Out – An example
 in THERE.com
DESCRIPTION:Games Gateway - U.S. Mid Atlantic Region\n\nHappy New Year to a
ll! \n\nI am delighted to announce our kick-off of 2009 with a fascinating
look at education in viritual space.\n\nVirtual Education From The Inside
Out – An example in THERE.com\nCo-presenters: Frank Whiting (Stungthumbz) a
nd Dr. Celia Pearce (Artemesia)\n\nThe University of There (UOT) was establ
ished June 21\, 2004\, as a participative teaching and learning venue for t
he subscribers of the THERE.com service\, and as a facility available to ou
tside academic institutions for experimental instruction in a virtual world
. The current Dean\, Stungthumbz (Frank) has managed the facility since it
s establishment.\n\nCourses of instruction range from the There-Unique such
as Dog Handling\, through “real world” skills such as Paint Shop Pro and L
ore of the Plains Indians. These courses are not for credit\, and no fee i
s charged to There members. In addition\, are courses being presented by o
utside institutions such as San Francisco State University in Communication
s and Environmental Studies which are for credit\, but allow THERE subscrib
ers to audit the online activities.\n\nWhile it is possible to operate in W
indows mode and split the screen\, most instructors prefer to use a combina
tion of lecture\, printed There books\, specialized club forums and links t
o their own web sites. The real contribution by UOT is actually the manage
d instruction facility and the in-world advertising.\n\nThe presentation on
15 January will consist of a guided tour of the extensive UOT facilities\,
including a visit to a virtual classroom and a chance to meet some of the
students and faculty.\n\nAbout the speakers:\nFrank Whiting is currently an
Academic Instructor in Computer Science for Shasta College. He is a retir
ed US Air Force officer and a retired Staff Senior Engineer for McDonnell D
ouglas Aerospace\, where he worked on both the Space Shuttle and Space Stat
ion programs. The first computer he worked on had 750 vacuum tubes.\n\nDr.
Celia Pearce\, is the director Director of the Emergent Game Group at Geor
gia Tech\, has been studying THERE.com for the past 5 years\, and is curren
tly doing research with the UOT.\n\nI look forward to seeing you all there
at There and at SAIC.\n\nThis event is organized byt Carl Symborski. Thank
you\, Carl!\n\nI welcome others organizing gatherings\, coming up with ide
as we can organized together and etc. So please do note hesitate to vocali
