Meeting description:

No, don't cringe. The law around video games and virtual worlds is actually fascinating and vitally important to game developers of all genres.

Did you know that enabling gamers to talk via voice while in a virtual world may subject you to FCC regulations? Or that the Child Online Privacy Protection Act under the FTC must be followed for game sites that knowingly include children under the age of 13? Whether you are a developer of console, PC or online games and worlds, there are legal issues which you need to keep in mind. Many of them are surprising, so join us to hear James Dunstan, partner at Garvey Schubert and Barer, an expert in video game and telecommunications law, discuss the ins and outs of interesting legal issues, what you as a game developer need to keep in mind, and steps to take as you develop your next game.

We look forward to seeing you in November!

This meetup was a wonderful reminder of the value of good corporate counsel! Having been in engineering VP roles at startups and corporations before, I relied on counsel to guide us through the legal jungle of topics, such as discussed at this meeting. While I focused on getting product out the door. So yes, lets hear it for great lawyers. Oh and thanks again Jim and your firm for hosting quite a few of our meetups this past year.

    •  Jim is a wonderful host and excellent speaker. His 10 tips to avoid running afoul of "the law" were informative and timely.
    •  Jim Dunstan of Garvey schubert Barer gave us an important and in-depth look at how the law - particularly telecom law - inserts itself in the video game and virtual world business. Every developer creating a web based or Internet connected game should know the information he shared. Yes, even in virtual worlds, lawyers are needed. Great presentation and discussion. Wonderful getting to know you all a bit better. Limor
    •  Being new to this group, I did not know what to expect. The group was friendly and professional with a good sense of humor. We had frank discussions and was a great way to meet people with the same passions as I have.
